Problem-solving Skills Training

"You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created."

— Albert Einstein

There’s more than one way to solve a problem – or is there? Problem-solving is a universal job skill that applies to any position and every organization. While everyone is tasked with some form of problem-solving in their organization, not all members are good at it. To build skill in problem one needs a methodology and the appropriate problem-solving tools.

The Four Stages of Problem-Solving

You can use many different approaches to problem-solving, but you'll typically work through four distinct steps no matter what route you take. Understanding each step of the process can help anyone hone one’s problem solving skills to better serve the journey toward a smart, workable solution.

  1. In the first step we PLAN our actions based on the defined problem and goal. This is the upfront  work of problem solving and the work most often missed by would-be problem solvers:

  • What is the core problem we need to solve?

  • Why do we want to solve this particular problem?

  • What is the goal – do we want to solve it completely or reduce its effective?

  • What resources do we need?

  • What resources do we have?

  • What is the best solution for fixing the problem with the available resources?

  • What is the plan for implementing the solution?

 2. In the next step we try out the solution we identified. We DO it. Making observations and learning along the way.

 3. Next we CHECK the effectiveness of the solution:

  • Did it work?

  • Can it be adjusted to get a better outcome?

  • Do this need further study?

 4. Based on our findings in step 3 we ACT by deciding to:

  • Accept the solution and standardize it as the way of doing things going forward.

  • Adjust the solution, and move through steps 1, 2, and 3 again.

  • Abandon the solution, and move through steps 1, 2, and 3 again.

This may seem straightforward at first glance, but many employees stumble over one or more of the steps and fail to successfully resolve issues. Successful problem-solving requires several important skills that will help them proceed efficiently from identification of a problem to implementation of a solution.

Our problem-solving training solutions are designed to develop the problem-solving mindset and help people successfully use the methodology and tools appropriate to your organization. If you’ve not chosen a suitable problem-solving approach we can help with that as well.
