​The Coaching Kata is the routine through which lean leaders teach and reinforce the Improvement Kata. The goal is to increase the organization’s problem solving capacity by helping people work systematically and resourcefully to do what is necessary to achieve target conditions. A kata coach provides the learner with the procedural guidance – not solutions – needed to be successful in overcoming the obstacles discovered in the Improvement Kata.

Toyota Kata provides a way to systematically change behavior, not by providing another tool, but by providing the thinking and behavior patterns that are best suited to using the tools of continuous improvement. It is a system that develops people and promotes excellent behaviors.

A kata is a pattern of practice; it can be a basic form, routine, or pattern of behavior.  In lean management, kata is the linked behaviors of improvement and coaching.
